Hooks are Fulling Mill 31310 unless otherwise stated.
Little Black Spinner
Stripped peacock body, foam thorax.
A good representation of any small fly drifting on the surface.
List code GJ 18 only £0.85
Hawthorn Fly
Having tied variations of this pattern for customers I have finally settled on this version. Its appearance is closer to the real thing than many fur & feather flies. Slim crow herl body, polyprop wing, trailing back legs, foam thorax over a black cock hackle.
List code GZ 16 only £0.85
Wonderwing gnat
Tied with a horizontal 'Wonderwing', this is a superb half-drowned black gnat.
List code GN 14 16 fine wire grub hook £0.85
This shows the Wonderwing Gnat in action.
Red ant
This own design has caught brown trout, rainbows, chub and grayling and has caught on river, reservoir and hill loch. Fore-and-aft hackles ensure that it always floats horizontally, and the mid-body red feather herl gives a red ‘halo’ when viewed against the light.
List code GA 16 18 £0.85
Hedgehog
Fished near the surface, but not necessarily on top. Three tiers of deerhair over a body of dubbed seal's fur. Three colours shown but I can provide almost any colour you prefer. Please ask.
Displayed: olive, orange, bibio (black/red/black)
Other colours include: red, claret, dark olive, green, amber, rust, golden olive, hot orange, etc.
List code GO 14 £0.70
Black foam beetle
This terrestrial is buoyant and needs no added floatant. It should ride in the surface, not on it. This is my preferred dressing, with hackle legs and a pearly underbody to simulate air bubbles.
List code GB 14 16 £0.65
Mini Midge
A fly for the connoisseur. Small but not the smallest. 2lb b.s. is the maximum point to which this should be attached.
A little smaller than the above. (And don’t forget, they are much smaller than these pictures) A ‘special occasion’ fly. A blob of pale green foam and a tiny watery-green hackle.
List code GF Hook: Varivas 2300 #26 £0.65
Smut
Same size as the above. See the picture below for comparison.
List code GU Hook: Varivas 2300 #26 £0.65
So that you can see the relative sizes of these small flies, in the picture are:
Top: standard #20, Kamasan B410 #20
Middle: standard #16
Bottom: standard 18, Varivas 2300 #26
Daddy long legs
Like all detached body flies, this allows use of a hook which is small relative to the fly.
List code GL 16 £0.80
Little Daddy
There are many flies about which are a much smaller version of the crane-fly. So here is a reduced tying of the detached body Daddy on smaller hooks.
List code GC 18 20 £0.70
G&H Sedge
Created by John Goddard and Cliff Henry. A good wake fly, very buoyant. Used on a dropper, will support a wet fly on the point.
List code GH 12 14 longshank £1.50
Floating snail
Own design after observing rainbows feasting on snails among water plants. They can float with their ‘foot’ in the surface film. A black & peacock spider can serve as a sub-surface snail.
List code GS 16 £0.65
The traditional patterns
Griffith’s gnat
On those rare occasions when the Red Ant fails, this will probably bring a rise. Good when there is small smut on the water.
List code GG 16 18 £0.65
Kite's Imperial
A neat hackled pattern with grey h*** herl and gold ribbed body
and a thorax behind the hackle.
Size 14, early season, grey dun hackle
Size 16, late season, honey dun hackle
List code GK 14 16 £0.85
Sherry Spinner
My interpretation of an old dressing using a dubbed body. A slight departure from the older version is the synthetic wing. This shows very well in transmitted light, as does the dubbing, shown on the right.
List code GP 14 16 18 £0.85
Tup's Indispensable
Designed 1900 by R. A. Austin, the secret of the dubbing not released until 1934. My dubbing is based on wool from a tup's scrotum, as the original, and the colour is imparted by a small addition of red seal's fur.
List code GI 14 16 18 £0.85
Driffield Dun
Obviously designed for the Driffield Beck, but not known by whom. Grey fur body ribbed yellow silk, forward mounted wings.
List code GX 14 16 £0.85
Greenwell's Glory
Reputed to have been designed in 1854 by Jas. Wright for Will. Greenwell. Probably the most well-known fly name outside angling circles
List code GW 14 16 18 £0.85
Iron Blue Dun
I have based this on the common elements of patterns from the 19th century -
red thread dubbed with mole, blue dun hackle, moorhen upper wing feather wings.
List code GR 14 16 18 £0.85
Gloire de Neublans
This is one of several patterns which Ihave added to the range after being asked to tie it by a customer.
List code GQ 14 16 £0.70
Grey Duster
The traditional dressing, i.e. no tail. This makes it an early form of emerger.
List code GD 12 14 16 £0.65
Sturdy's Fancy
Designed by Tom Sturdy for the Ure, principally for grayling. Similar to Red Tag but with a white hackle.
List code GT 14 16 18 £0.65
Grayling Fiddler
Eric Horsfall Turner. A typical grayling fly, but useful also for trout. No tail, will therefore float like an emerger.
List code GY 16 18 £0.65
Terry's Terror
Nominally dry but often used as 'damp' for which purpose the hackle can be clipped flat beneath the shank.
