A quiet road by Loch Caolisport, Argyll.
We met this dog otter trotting along the road on two occasions. A smaller one was feeding in the loch just over the wall.

A stonefly nymph. Less than 1/4".
Wriggles as it walks.

A baby signal crayfish, about 3/8" (or a size
14 hook)
No 'fly' pattern well established for this creature,
though according to the keeper, trout often eat crayfish bigger than
this.

A few brown trout rising to them.

Trying to identify -
Yellow May Spinner (Heptagenia sulphuria)?
however, this is perhaps more associated with slower rivers, but there
are many stone clinger nymphs under the pebbles here.
If anyone knows, please email me

Willow
fly, Leuctra geniculata
(or so I think.
Needle Fly and Medium Stone Fly are similar)
many near the canal, Sept 2007

Heather
fly, Bibio pomonae.
Very similar to the Hawthorn
Fly but more likely to be observed on Scottish lochs. Observe the
reddish colour of the upper leg segments - all black on the Hawthorn.
This is one of swarms on a heather moor near
Ullapool.

Water
vole footprints, River Swale near Gatenby.
I used to see these inoffensive animals every
time I went fishing. Now a sighting is rare.

little creature (about 1mm diam) was extracted from my flesh. I pick

at the other side of the canal. If it were any nearer I would prefer

this macho hunk changed its mind about crossing the river. |

A
very sad picture. Nothing to do with water life, I just wanted to share

Success
with a small Klinkhamer. (Also caught small chub and grayling. Not a
sign of a trout.)

Several
mayflies dancing over the field, but saw none hatching. Looks to me
like Ephemera danica. We are not supposed to have
them here.
